Make an Aria

Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

Music Theatre Wales presented by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

As part of Festival of Voice, we held a Public Masterclass of Five New Arias exploring the theme of Immigration…

Composer Stuart MacRae, fresh from his success with the opera The Devil Inside for Music Theatre Wales and Scottish Opera, lead this masterclass and performance of five new arias composed by students from the college with five writers, all new to opera.

After each aria was performed by professional singers, Stuart MacRae provided feedback on the composition and dramatic shape of the aria, guiding the emerging artists and providing them and the audience with a fascinating insight into the process of writing for opera.

We are so grateful to the Welsh Refugee Council for their participation in this project, which explored the theme of Immigration, an issue which touches all our lives and which is the central theme of MTW’s next production – The Golden Dragon.

Make an Aria is an outreach and insight project run by Music Theatre Wales which aims to stimulate and inform the writing of new opera.
