Woman’s Hour - Seeing Voices
Acclaimed British band Woman’s Hour embarked on a UK tour of arts venues, presented their newly devised live performance Seeing Voices, in which British Sign Language (BSL) took the centre-stage. We were so pleased to be the first and only event in Wales to host this unique gig as part of our first International Arts Festival.
In 2014 Woman’s Hour released the song Her Ghost. The accompanying video featured a young deaf actor performing the lyrics in BSL. The British Journal of Photography described the video as “rich and glowing, fluent and immediate”. Subsequently the band developed the idea into a live touring performance.
Seeing Voices incorporated a specially commissioned video projection by the artists Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, using previously unseen footage from the British Deaf Association archives. This was the first time the work has been performed in Wales.
This performance was supported by Artes Mundi and Wales Millennium Centre.
