Beyond Borders: Songs of Separation, Songs of Unity

St David's Hall

Songs of Separation was a rare celebration and collaboration of the many vocal styles and languages of Wales, Scotland, England and Ireland. Filled with storytelling warmth, sharp political observation, harmonic invention and sheer beauty. A richly evocative and quietly provocative collection of traditional and newly composed songs, Beyond Borders digs into both what divides us and what brings us together as ordinary people, across time and distance, culture and landscape.

Directed for this performance by songwriter and Scots singer Karine Polwart, project creator and bassist Jenny Hill and guitarist Jenn Butterworth, this event also brought together boundary breaking Scots Mary Macmaster, Kate Young and Hannah Read, as well as Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans from award-winning English ensemble Lady Maisery.

For this one-off Songs of Separation performance, the Beyond Borders cast were joined by four guest vocalists. From Wales; former Welsh Music Award winner, songwriter and harpist Georgia Ruth, and Welsh language poet, songwriter and guitarist Gwyneth GlynJulie Fowlis brought her knowledge of traditional Scottish Gaelic song to the mix, whilst County Waterford’s Karan Casey, a former member of folk supergroup Solas, sings in both Irish Gaelic and English.
